One quarter of all known species of plants and animals on earth belong to the order Coleoptera – the beetles. I have always been fascinated by their infinite variety of color and texture. With over 330,000 species, happily, I will never run out of inspiration.
Patterns have been a consistent source of intrigue for me. In this work, I draw from a wealth of cultural ingenuity and scientific invention. Malian mud cloth, ornate baroque patterns, Moroccan tile work and circuit boards are referenced to infuse and inspire these chimerical creatures.
The forms are dimensionally carved into glass, painted with transparent dye, gilded, sanded off and dyed again. This process is often repeated numerous times before the alchemy is finalized.
